The Love before Thy Love
We sought to be loved by mortal hearts
And forget the Love that sought us first
We mistook a passing gaze for a promise,
And built our forever upon fleeting hands.
When they departed.
We mourned as thou love itself had died;
Clinging to memories,
And calling our loneliness a broken heart.
Yet Thou, O Lord, hast loved us
Before we ever knew how to love.
Thy mercy asketh not that we be worthy,
Thy presence departeth not when others do
Teach us, therefore,
To love without making idols
To be held without becoming bound.
And to let go without losing hope.
For mortal love may fade as the flower,
But Thine endureth beyond every season.
Make our hearts Thine first, O Lord
That we may learn to love
As Thou hast loved us.
