“Bear with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgive each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” — Colossians 3:13
When we talk about church or any Christian community, our first instinct is to think it should always be perfect, loving, kind, and understanding. Honestly, those are the very qualities a church should pursue, and relationships within the body of Christ should be built upon them.
However, there are moments when we encounter a different side of the church. The church becomes quieter, people sound a little rude, love and kindness seem less visible, understanding becomes difficult, and community can feel awkward. Nobody likes that side.
But the church is not made up only of holy, kind, and understanding people. The church is also a place where the broken gather, where the lost are searching, where the unloved are present, and where people who have never truly experienced grace come to encounter God.
At times, the church can also feel difficult because truth is being spoken. Sin is addressed, uncomfortable realities are discussed, correction takes place, and lives are challenged by the Gospel. Such moments are not always pleasant, but they are necessary part of spiritual growth.
The truth is, the church is still made up of imperfect people being transformed by a perfect Savior. That means there will be misunderstandings, weaknesses, failures, and moments of disappointment. Yet God continues to work in and through His people.
So when you encounter such people or such moments, I hope you do not leave the community because of human imperfections. In the end, it is God we seek to worship, and it is God who transforms our lives together.
Let us continue to forgive and continue to love, even when it becomes difficult. Christian community survives not because everyone is perfect, but because grace is practiced daily. Sometimes people may fail us unintentionally, and at other times we ourselves may become the reason someone else feels hurt. That is why forgiveness, patience, and love remain essential within the church. As God continues to show mercy to us, let us also extend mercy to one another.
Sometimes the side of the church you may not like is also the very place where God teaches patience, humility, forgiveness, and grace.
Prayer
Lord, Thank You for the gift of the church, even with all its imperfections. Help me not to lose heart when I am hurt, disappointed, or misunderstood by people within the community. Teach me to love with grace, forgive with humility, and remain faithful even in uncomfortable moments.
Shape my hearts through every experience and remind me that You are still at work among Your people. May I seek You above human expectations and continue to grow together with others in truth, love, and unity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
