In the beginning, God

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1

The Bible does not open with an argument for God’s existence, nor with a philosophical debate about origins. It begins with a simple, profound declaration: “In the beginning, God.” Before time, matter, or life—there was God. Everything else follows from that truth.

This opening verse reminds us that God is the source, sustainer, and goal of all things. Our lives did not begin with our own plan’s or ambitions; they began with Him. When we recognize that God is the first word and the foundation of all creation, we find rest for our restless hearts.

In a world that often begins with “In the beginning, I”—my goals, my achievements, my desires—Scripture calls us back to the true centre: God Himself.

  • In the beginning of creation — God was there, speaking order into chaos.

  • In the beginning of salvation — God took the initiative, sending His Son.

  • In the beginning of your day — God is present, waiting to guide and strengthen you.

  • In the beginning of your career — God sets the plan, purpose, and direction for your path.

  • In the beginning of your family — God is the initiator and provider.

  • In the beginning of every new season — God remains faithful, unchanging, and sovereign.

Whatever new chapter we step into—new responsibilities, new struggles, new hopes—the most important truth is that God is already there. He is not an afterthought but the starting point.

Whenever a new season of life begins, pause to ask: Is God at the beginning of my plans and desires? As “In the beginning, God” shaped everything, so must your life be shaped by Him.

Reflection

Where in your life have you begun with “I” instead of “God”? How would your perspective change today if you allowed Him to be the beginning of your decisions, work, and relationships?

Prayer

Lord, remind me that You are the beginning of all things. Help me to start each day and each choice with You at the centre. May my life reflect this truth: In the beginning, God.
