Fix the Chair

“Fix the chair first.”

 “Fix the chair first.”

It sounds simple. Almost ordinary. Yet it carries deep spiritual weight.

Before you take up the microphone. Before you stand on the stage. Before you lead worship or preach with confidence —fix the chair first.

It is easy to go on stage and lead praise like a professional. It is easy to speak sermons as though you know it all. It is easy to welcome others warmly when the lights are on and people are watching. But are you willing to serve where no one notices?

Are you willing to arrive early and arrange the chairs?

To adjust what is out of place before anyone sees it?

To fix what is incomplete without expecting recognition?

The stage tests our talent.

The chair tests our character.

Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (NIV)

The One who deserved the highest throne chose the lowest towel. Before teaching multitudes, He washed feet (John 13). Before He was exalted, He humbled Himself, “He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:8 (NIV)

In God’s kingdom, hidden service is never wasted. What is done quietly shapes who we truly are. The applause of people may elevate you for a moment, but unseen obedience builds you for a lifetime.

Perhaps the real question is not, “Are you ready to lead?” But rather, “Are you willing to serve?”

Because long before God entrusts a platform, He looks for humility. Long before He enlarges influence, He forms the heart.

So, fix the chair first.

Serve faithfully in the unnoticed places. Arrange what needs arranging. Do the small things with sincerity. For it is in the quiet corners that God prepares leaders for public faithfulness.

Prayer

Lord, guard my heart from seeking applause more than obedience. Teach me to serve in hidden places with joy. Make me faithful in small things before You entrust me with greater ones. Amen.
