“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it.” 2 Timothy 3:14
This is one of the most emotional letters Paul ever wrote. Knowing that the end of his life was near, he wrote to Timothy with the heart of a spiritual father. It is hard to imagine Timothy reading these words without tears. In the midst of describing the difficult times that would come, Paul gives Timothy one simple but powerful instruction: continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of. Remain grounded in the Word of God.
Today, we live in a world that is exactly as Paul described—a world filled with lovers of self, slander, brutality, and every kind of evil. A few years ago, I told a friend that we live in a very brutal and evil world. She disagreed and said it was only a matter of perspective. Today, it no longer feels like a matter of perspective; it has become an undeniable reality. Politicians often seem more concerned with power than with the people they serve. Many leaders pursue their own interests rather than the good of those they lead. Self-centeredness has become so common that people no longer hesitate to hurt others to get what they want. Morality seems to be losing its grip on society. What a sad world we live in.
Because of this, Paul's words to Timothy speak to us more than ever: "Continue in what you have become convinced of." As followers of Jesus Christ, we must remain firmly rooted in God's Word—unwavering in conviction, unshakable in faith, and steadfast in obedience.
Paul goes on to explain why Scripture must remain at the centre of our lives. It is God-breathed. It is not merely a collection of ancient writings, but the very Word of God given to us. When everything else fails, His Word remains. Scripture continues to be useful for teaching us what is true, rebuking us when we go astray, correcting our errors, and training us to live righteous lives.
Sometimes I wonder whether a day may come when every other source—even many Christian books and voices—becomes compromised or distorted. In many ways, we are already seeing this happen. But one thing will never change: the Word of God will remain faithful and true.
More than ever, we need to be equipped in the Scriptures. If you are a pastor or a ministry leader, teach your people not only to listen to sermons but also to study the Bible for themselves. They must learn to stand on God's Word even when no preacher or teacher is around to guide them. If you still depend entirely on others to understand the Bible, make every effort to learn how to study it yourself. The day may come when no one else is there, but God's Word will still be there to strengthen, guide, and sustain you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, in a world filled with confusion, compromise, and evil, help me to continue in what I have learned and become convinced of. Give me a deep hunger to know the Scriptures, wisdom to understand them, and courage to live them out faithfully. Keep me from being swayed by false teachings or the changing opinions of the world. Root me firmly in Christ so that I may remain steadfast in every season. Let Your Word shape my minds, guard my hearts, and direct my steps until the day I see You face to face. In Jesus' name, Amen.
